Today In U.S. Military history

Today in 1865 Ft Fisher, NC fell to Union forces after a 3 day battle. Ft Fisher at located at North Inlet on the Cape Fear River guarded the approaches to Wilmington, NC which at the time was the last open port to blockade runners left to the Confederacy. Today it is a State park that still preserves some of the earthworks and artillery pieces. After the battle 49 Medal of Honor were awarded to Union Soldiers, Sailors and Marines.

Today Ft Fisher is an interesting place to visit and is within a mile or so from the North Carolina Aquarium and the NC Ferry across the Cape Fear to Southport.
Below is a link for information on the park and aquarium.
