Today In U.S. Military History

Today in 1814 the U.S.S. Constitution captured and destroyed destroyed the HMS Pictou and captured the armed merchantmen Lovely Anne. The Constitution which remains in Naval Service today was responsible for capturing or destroying five British warships during the war of 1812.
It was during this conflict that the Constitution picked up the nickname Old Ironsides when it battled the HMS Guerriere.
