At a time of budget crisis and the need for the Pentagon to show it can do contracting right according to the Washington Post the new cost for the development and delivery of 28 new helicopters for Presidential executive transport has risen to over 11 billion dollars or 400 million each. This is an outrage and was predicted by Sikorsky and some members of congress when the contract award was first issued. What appears to have happened instead of a simple modification program to an off the shelf EH-101 helicopter all the new requirements to make it “Presidential” will result in what is essentially a new design. What a waste of time and taxpayers dollars. The Navy will offer all kinds of excuses but the bottom line is no way should this program go forward it should be killed off now and the contract should be awarded were it needed to be with Sikorsky.
